How Three Young Men of State Cleared the Way to Victory

Client
Mississippi State University Libraries

Date
March 2022 - June 2023

The project started with two brothers, Dr. Stephen L. Wallace and Walter L. Wallace, Jr. The two brothers approached the Mississippi State University Libraries to create an exhibit to commemorate their father, Walter Wallace Sr. Walter Wallace Sr. was a Mississippi State graduate, who served as a minesweeper in the June 1994 invasion of Normandy. The two brothers donated memorabilia, documents, letters, along with funding in order to make the exhibit a reality.

The design went through numerous revisions and redesigns. We wanted the Wallace brothers’ vision be matched in design and execution. The design developed gradually after various iterations, starting with a simple sketch and eventually fleshing itself out into a full-fledged design.

This Project was a large-scale effort from various people of different disciplines. Exhibit archivists, historians, laborers, and supervisors were all involved in this massive undertaking. Exhibit archivists helped to select and curate which items would be displayed. Historians did research and wrote the introduction and information. The supervisors kept the project organized and on track. My fellow designer, Diana, and I worked on the design and layout of the exhibit. And the laborers and building staff installed the glass, shelving, and acrylic paneling.

The Exhibit Space

The space was originally used to house a set of nine CRTV monitors. The monitors were removed, leaving room to create the exhibit. Measurements were taken place to ensure that the design would match the dimensions of the space. The map used in the backdrop is made of adhesive vinyl. Many of the memorabilia are original items. The documents and photos are replicas. The text and information surrounding the space were printed on custom acrylic. The space is inlaid with lights to illuminate the space.
